Hmmm... i don't think so leh... a portable hdisk formatted in ntfs should be readable in other pc as long as they are running XP or Vista.  I thought as long as it is not encrypted it should be fine.  I do not have to do anything if i pluck in my portable hdisk to office notebook /home pc or wife's pc. No registration done.

Okay if you have a directory where you create as your "user" folder. That particular folder will not be usable on other computer. But there were many occasions when people cannot read my HDD, only I can read it via my notebook.

oh... ok now i think i get it... i never create user folder on my hardisk.  so actually i can have both... user folder to restrict other people from viewing without encryption, and another generic folder which anyone can view.  if i want to restrict viewing i usually do encryption.  but there is a danger..if pc fails, retriving the data on another pc will be an issue. i think same go for user directory/folder.

I think canew does not have any 'user' folder created. the whole hardisk is 'open'.

I don't understand, all my NTFS disks are fully readable on another computer. when I rebuilt my PC, all my old HDD can be mounted can copied to the new HDDs, including folders that were created for "users".

Okay, I am not sure how you create. May be with total zero security in place.

I guess when you ever encounter access problem, then you will probably remember this thread. NTFS is only compatibale with Windows....I personally will not use that File system for portable HDD. You never know where you will need to connect that HDD to. Example...my PS3, TV, DVD recorder all cannot read my NTFS HDD, while a FAT32 HDD has no issue connecting with those device.
