this is an prime example of my photographic mantra: buy the biggest flash you can afford. in this particular case, THREE of them

in order to photograph the inflorescence which is at the top of a 20m tall palm tree, with the sun behind the tree, one would have gotten a severely underexposed picture. in order to lit the subject so far up the tree against the full power of the late morning sun, we used three 550EX, set to maximum power, triggered via ST-E2. I was holding the camera some distance away using a 70-200/4L at 163mm in order to get a side-on view of the flowers (rather than "up-skirt view"), and the flash were much nearer to the tree in order to have a match against the sunlight.
its not just about lighting the inflorescence, but lighting it enough so that we also get the blue sky behind the palm.
