"when in doubt, shoot first, ask questions later"

Cut to the chase, this is my problem.

I cannot do any file maintenance activities to selected files.

I have a folder "X" in a HDD.  Within X, I ave 4 subfolder X1, X2, X3 and X4.  These subfolders were created over a period of 18 months.  X,  X1, X2 and X3 were copied from a smaller HDD onto the current one.  X4 was created directly on the current HDD.

I am unable to do the following in X1, X2 and X3 - delete, move files (to any other folder with either drag and drop or the cut command), labeling, rating, rename (using F2 function key or batch rename), append or replace metadata, basically any file operations.

This applies to all files, raw, tiff, jpeg.

These problems applies to only X1-X3, NOT X4.

The error messages for move is " The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient permission".
The error message for rename is "This file cannot be renamed to to "xxx" because you do not have sufficient permission or it is in use".  The file is definately not in use.
The rest, delete, change label or rating, simply nothing happened.

Meanwhile, I can do all the renaming, deleting, moving etc in explorer without problems.

I checked Vista, I have full admin rights as far as I can tell.

Any ideas?  Changing to Mac or XP is NOT an option at this point.

I know you can get 3rd party software to do this.  I have first party software, explorer to do this, just I like to be able to do it in Bridge.

Have you tried disabling - User Account Control (UAC) ?

Perhaps this help -
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/12/19/turn-off-or-disable-user-account-control-uac-in-windows-vista/

If you encrypted your files unknowingly then it will be more complicated.  If you did not encrypt your files, then perhaps this may help.....

This i got it from another forum..

=QUOTE=
Right click on the drive you are trying access goto Properties.
Click on the security tab and then click on Advanced.
Click the tab for 'Owner', if your current Vista account appears in the box
below, select the user name and then click Apply.

Click on the Permissions tab in the same window, then 'Edit' - add your user
name to the list of permitted users/groups if it is not already there.
Select the your name in the list then click Edit, adjust the permissions as
you require, normally Full Control, click OK.

Ensure there is a tick in 'Replace all existing inheritable

permissions.....etc' box.
Click Apply, OK, OK, OK.

first things i do with any installation of vista is to:

1) install SP1
2) disable UAC
3) disable indexing
4) remove windows defender and its subs

dp, i thought you've figured it out.

One of the methods...
click Start > type Indexing Options > hit enter. Click the "Modify" button
click "Show All Locations"

Choose those that you don't want to index. Don't uncheck or unselect all at one go. Try one or two first and see how it goes.

Or try this.. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/09/17/disable-and-turn-off-windows-vista-search-indexer-and-indexing-service/
