Your contrast and saturation is a little high and its killing alot of the shadow and colour details IMO. Examples would be the tree snake and bat. Also the shadowed eyes in the animals like tiger and cheetah don't really flatter them i think. I do like that lemur one though. I like that tree snake one too but yea the lack of detail on the scales doest spoil it for me.

Thanks for the critique, really appreciate it.

In contrasty lighting, what would be the better solution to "light up" the eyes - using an external flash  to fill the shadows or lower the contrast?

Fill flash and shoot raw heh Cheesy If cant use flash then with RAW you can use high contrast but still dodge back the eyes thanks to the 12/14bits per channel vs the 8bits for raw. That's like 16 to 64 times more info per channel.

Never really thought much about that. All I ever do is take my gear out & shoot, shoot & shoot.

Techincal wise, other than the comments brought out by Raptor, are there anything else that should be improved on?
