First off a big thanks to www.j2ephotography.com for lending me the hotlights and stands. I initially planned to use a nice blank wall but to to space constraints I had to use a couch near a corner. Here are just some of the many four legged guests that came for the fundraising party..

Nike and Fila

Hazel and Angel

Buffy and Promise

more coming up..

Realyy sweet portraits N!

Was that a bit of handshake or was it OOF in some of the shots?

I'm trying to work on 'existing' light portraits more. Being addicted to powerful (relative term) lights on location shoots is taking a toll on my shoulders, but nothing beats the control and versatility. Speed of working is a drag though.

Yea prob OOF as I had little time to check my shots.. I think it would be close to impossible to shoto ambient at the cafe unless you go for a 1.4 or 1.2 at iso 1600+ hehe.. Yea I personaly prefer ambient too.. I still need a lot of work with studio or controlled lighting..

5D or 1D Mk III and f/1.4-f/1.8 lenses is the way to go on these kinda assignments.

Controlling light is easy once you understand the principles of light. Its packing and carting all the stuff at location shoots  then setting up, and moving stuff around that's a bitch!

The frustrating thing is, with strobes supplementing existing light, it becomes so much easier to alter ratios and such and you don't have to worry about too shallow a DOF because you have the option to shoot a 85mm or 100mm lens at f/3-5.6 with lower ISOs to make sure you have enough DOF to cover the face while retaining the sculpting you want and noise is hardly a problem. Sigh ... how I wished that I could get the same amount of power and control with just a simple speedlight. If truth be told, I HATE draggin along a flight steward's trolley and extra backpacks at shoots.

Do you use strobe frames?

Haha no $ to upgrade gear now still surviving on a 350D.. I only rent when needed. I agree that setting up and carting the stuff around is tiring though. I dont own any of the lights or stads except for my own set of cloth backdrops as I hardly do these shoots for $ =p Most of my clients want outdoor natural light shots anyway.

I use DIY bounce cards and LS's to modify my flash output at times.
