My first try on my new 'macro' setup 85mm and +4 closeup. Lens is meant for portraits but works quite ok as an macro lens IMO.

Heres a quick shot done at the common garden near my apartments. Lighting with a flash and bounce card. Note the creamy bokeh at f/5.6 :O

Cant wait for the step down ring to arrive so I can try the close up on my 70-200 for some real 1:1 action...

Kewl! Looks like you got it great for a first attempt Nic!

Also, you made a great choice of subject matter for the exercise.

Personally, I would love to see a darker BG to make the snail 'stand' out a bit more.

If you want to try, I have a set of extension rings ... but they're manual though. Works fab with tele lenses, esp manual ones. Cheap and will get you past 1:1. I'm willing to let go if you're really interested.

Nah its more of a casual thing but thanks for the offer.. you gotta agree that the bokeg even at 5.6 is  Afro

I think a +4 at 200mm should give 1:1 as a +4 on a 85 is close to 1/2 life size..

erm I don't think that's how the diopters work, the magnification increment is not linear.

i got extension tubes. it brings you closer, but focusing is a pain... and with manual tubes, changing apertures too...

Yeah...I have manual lenses where using manual tubes is a breeze!

Besides, where are you going to get razor sharp potential for more than 1:1 macro at forty bucks?

Different focal lengths == different magnifications.

shorter focal length == more magnification

for a 50mm, i got an extension tube of 1, 2 and 3. mounted all, shot a magnification of 2:1
