Checking for interest.

Would anyone like to shoot food? Not for a restuarant or anything. Just a simple project we could try to do together for the fun of it.

Thoughts?

Shooting food is easy, once you understand the basic concepts behind lighting.

It's styling the food that's a major pain.

But we would need a large enough, air-conditioned place to do it in (with a kitchen/prep area). Food takes an exraordinary amount of time and is very tedious. Not for those who like to go 'piak piak piak piak piak piak piak piak piak piak piak piak' at 8 fps.

It's more like one frame per hour.  giggling...

even the choice of table cloth and crockery!

I have a friend who owns the CaffeBar at Parkway Parade. He did his own menu shots when he started. Maybe can jio him to shoot together and ask his chef to make a dish?

Sounds interesting!

What kind of food do they serve, and is there outside light from a nearby window?

I've found that even though most commercial shoots are done in studio, some of the most evocative food shots were all done by natural light (http://www.sararemington.net/)

No worries. There are ways to 'replicate' natural light using large diffusion panels and sheets of fabric. One good example was Annie Lebowitz and how she shot the queen using a very large diffusion panel to simulate window light.

Right now waiting for Uncle Choy to see what his friend says.

But if it's 4 to 5 togs, I suggest that only 1 or 2 togs act as the main togs, and the rest assist, then rotate. Generally, food doesn't stay optimum looking for very long. Depending on arrangements, I can help tease the food a bit, if Uncle Choy's friend/chef doesn't mind.

Can anyone's large reflector be converted into a shoot through diffusion panel?
