I am not only impressed by the even lighting and sharpness, but also for the beautiful fins these fishes have. mine the fins all rot already, the fish kept biting each other  Laugh till drop

kel,

I'm still hoping to hear your words of wisdom in this thread. But from your sharing above, sounds like you don't know much about keeping fishes, despite the years of effort. Hope you don't take this in the wrong way, but I'm very happy to share if you are interested to know more. I'm crazy about fishes and the amount we spent on them is nothing compared to the gear used to photograph them. So rest assured they won't 'return to soil' after a shoot.

Ask John about his experience. I'm sure we would love to see you try. I'll arrange a special evening/night session. Just list down what you need.

They only cost S$2 and can be hours of photographic fun on a rainy weekend. Think about it.  Wink

I try to find a fightning fish near my home market, but most of them have their fins torn and etc...do you buy and keep them for a while before shooting them?

Not always, but sometimes, I leave them at home for a while and their fins will look better with a slight dose of salt or a solution that aquarists call "melafix". Commonly available at fish shops. Usually, I just buy the nice ones from the fish shops. The transparent glass goby shown in the picture below was bought and shot in the same evening. No need to do anything to the fishes.

If you want to buy some fishes and want them cheap, Clementi is a good haunt. Got variety too.

Cheers,

p.s. one tip...for fighting fishes, the short fin type cost about S$5 to S$10 each. But much easier to shoot. The long fin types are like dancing girls with silk skirts... a true test of patience.
