Yeah, check with Canon Service Center. Unless they have some kind of 'cover backside' policy, they should be able to change for you in 5 mins (changing screens takes only 30 seconds, but they will usually check check a bit to make sure it's properly installed). ALWAYS do on the spot tests before leaving the center.

If CSC doesn't have it, definitely can find on e-bay for around USD45 before shipping. You can even get after-market split-image screens there. I have one in my bod. Michael, you might even be able to find some 5D screens cheap, usually from sellers who have extras, or bought the wrong ones.

At any rate, changing screens on the 5D and 40D, like the 1D series should be a piece of cake because they were designed to be user-interchangeable.  Wink Michael, you want I can change for you with ... err, both eyes closed even!  giggling...

I have heard other togs say good things about the KatzEye screens, even though one esteemed CGer was vehemently vocal against them. But they are damned pricey - USD150 for the standard split-image screen, without the extra bright coating, no etched lines, and before shipping.

Oh, I have an extra mint cond Nikon Split-Image (K) screen in case anyones wants one to experiment with.

If I'm not mistaken, the 40D has a small range of dedicated screens the Ef-A, Ef-D and Ef-S.

The A comes standard with the bod.

The D is the one with etched grid lines, and

The S is the 'super precise' one for manual focusing with fast lenses (f/1.8 - f/2.8 according to lit, so wonder how it would do with f/1.2-f/1.4 lenses)

For a comprehensive list of what screens (inc illustrations) fits what bods plus CfN needed etc, have a look here: http://atinyblip.wordpress.com/eos-focusing-screens/  Share share for the benefit of CGers hor.

Just a quick tip to those who have not changed focusing screens before: with the exception of Ec focusing screens (which is for the 1-series  cameras), the little tab on the focusing screen should be positioned on the right when installing. You don't have to worry about installing a focusing screen upside-down or back-to-front, because if the tab is in the wrong place, the pop-down tray will not latch shut. Smiley

Thank you, Dream Merchant and Michael.

Although I was not born in Singapore, I've been here long enough to understand Singlish, so I chuckle along with everyone else everytime someone says something funny. Smiley
